Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs are often used in conjunction with acupuncture for added therapeutic effect. While many cultures have herbal medicine traditions, the sophistication of Chinese herbal medicine is truly remarkable. Chinese herbal medicine has a long history reaching back several thousand years, and the resulting system is now used to treat everything from the common cold to cancer. While any condition, in theory, may be improved or resolved with acupuncture, some conditions, such as eczema, acne, and candidiasis are best treated herbally.

There are thousands of herbs in the Chinese materia medica, of which about 300 are commonly used. Herbal formulas come in several different forms including powder, capsule, tincture, ointment, decoction, and wash. Chinese herbs can be extremely effective and, when properly prescribed, have little or no side effects. However, it can be difficult to know how a formula will interact with prescription drugs. Also, the more drugs one is taking, the more potential exists for unwanted interaction. Considering a recent Mayo Clinic study which informed that 70% of Americans are on at least one drug, more than 50% are on two, and 20% are on 5 or more, it is no surprise that acupuncture is a safer choice for many people. To reiterate: it is very important to tell me about all the medications and supplements you are currently taking so that we can avoid any unwanted interactions with your formula.
